Syria is tightening public spending and reprioritizing investment projects after public finances recorded a deficit of about $1 billion in the first half of 2026, amid rising energy, transport and basic-needs costs. The presidency directed ministries, following a Finance Ministry proposal, to cut non-essential expenditures and review projects based on necessity, completion rates and expected impact.
